Foot procedures

The foot contains several nerves, joints and small bones. With about 26 bones and 33 joints, the foot is broadly divided into three parts; the hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot. It is important to acknowledge that most health issues associated with the feet and ankle do not require surgery. Surgery largely depends on the severity of the symptoms and the patients need and response to treatment. The most common foot procedures include:

Hammer toes

he condition can cause the toe to bend permanently. Hammer toes can be treated using arthroplasty and arthrodesis. Arthroplasty is a delicate procedure that involves the removal of the deformed joint between the phalanges or the toe bones. Arthrodesis on the other hand, is the process of binding the phalanges to create stability. When undertaking the procedure, the patients may be asked to wear flat shoes.

Bunions

Bunions usually appear as bony lumps on the side of the foot. The most affected area is around the big toe. The condition is common in women who wear wrong footwear. The other causes include rheumatoid arthritis, which may require surgical correction through osteotomy.

Plantar facilitis

the condition causes the fibrous tissues in the feet to toughen up and often affects the heel bone down to the sole of the feet. Treatment for plantar facilitis rarely demands surgical treatment.
