About Dr. Adam Bitterman

Adam David Bitterman, DO, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and a specialist in foot and ankle surgery and treatment. He has a special focus in treating the lower leg, including foot and ankle arthritis, deformities in the area, disorders of the Achilles tendon and sports injuries. His extensive knowledge, training and skill are reflected in his high level of comfort and precision with arthroscopic, open and minimally invasive surgery for foot and ankle conditions.

Dr. Bitterman takes an individualized approach to every patient, understanding his or her unique concerns. He is committed to crafting a personalized plan for each patient’s treatment that is designed to achieve maximal outcomes, including restoring functionality to its pre-injury point, improving quality of life and relieving pain.


While providing a full array of orthopaedic surgical and other treatments to his patients, Dr. Bitterman is also directly engaged in educating the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Bitterman is the Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Hofstra University/Northwell. In addition, he is a clinical instructor in surgery at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a graduate of Bingham University, he pursued medical studies at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at North Shore-LIJ Plainview Orthopaedic Consortium, where he served as chief resident, and then graduated from a specialized foot and ankle fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

During his fellowship, Dr. Bitterman was awarded the Jorge A. Galante Research Fellow Award for his study into Achilles tendinosis. In addition to his extensive research work, he also put his skills into practice in sports medicine in Chicago, where he worked side by side with the team physicians for the Chicago Bulls of the NBA and Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball.

With extensive publications to his credit, Dr. Bitterman continues to advance his research in the realm of foot and ankle surgery and orthopaedic medicine. He is the associate chair of the Research Committee at the Plainview Hospital Orthopaedic Residency program. Among others, his key research interests include studying outcomes of foot and ankle surgery, disorders of the Achilles tendon and advancing patient comfort and understanding of orthopaedic procedures. He regularly lectures to other physicians about disorders of and surgical treatment for the foot and ankle at a variety of conferences and professional events.

He is also heavily involved in advancing the profession of ortI’m hopaedic surgery. He serves as a member of the Health Policy Committee and the Residents and Fellows Committee of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). He is also the alternate district representative for District 2 – NYSSOS of AOFAS. He serves as a reviewer for scholarly journals in the field, including “Foot and Ankle International” and “Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics” in Chicago, Illinois. He also serves as a reviewer for “Orthopedics” and the “American Journal of Orthopedics,” both based in New Jersey. From 2017 through 2018, he served on the editorial council of the American Orthopaedic Association, Emerging Leaders.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society. He is affiliated with Huntington Hospital, Nassau University Medical Center, Plainview Hospital, North Shore University Hospital and Northwell Health Orthopaedic Institute.

In addition to his peer-reviewed scholarly writings, he is also committed to public medical education and has written a number of popular articles on orthopaedic medicine. He maintains a Twitter account at @DrAdamBitterman, where he focuses on medical commentary.
